The Real Turning Point?

Just listened to the Grove City-Slippery Rock game. This was for the D-10 3A title. Top-seeded Grove City won, 42-23. Star of the game was junior WR Gavin Lutz, who among other things, made a dazzling 61-yard punt return for a TD when everybody else had given up on the ball. That would be the start of 35 unanswered points for the Eagles to take command.

It will also be called The Turning Point.

But it was a play before that that really swung Uncle Mo Grove City's way, IMHO.

The Rockets -- who eliminated the Oilers in the first round -- had scored on their first three possessions to take a 17-7 lead. They were on their way to more points on their fourth possession when scarambling QB William Mokel apparently had a first down on a run, but instead pulled up and hit someone downfield with a pass. Only trouble is, he was past the line of scrimmage when he let go on the ball. Slippery Rock punted on the next play and that's Lutz strutted his stuff.

Lutz caught five passes for 88 yards, including another dazzler to set up a TD. His QB, junior Hunter Hohman, was 10-13 passing and scored four touchdowns. Grove City's final TD came on a 50-yard fumble return.

Oddly, Slippery Rock outgunned Grove City, 324-306.

Elsewhere in the playoffs Friday night:

  • McDowell lost to State College, 57-50, in three OTs after the Trojans fumbled on the 3 on its third possession.

  • Mighty Southern Columbia avenged a rare regular season loss to Mount Carmel in the District 4 2A championship.

  • If the Meadville Bulldogs get that far in 4A, they won't be facing the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last season: Jersey Shore. Those Bulldogs were ousted Friday by Allentown Central Catholic. It also means transfer Nic Williams won't be facing his old school.

Meadville stats

Khalon Simmons, who has been starting for Meadville since his sophomore season, has 99 touchdowns and needs 31 yards vs. Juniata for 5,000 yards rushing in his career. Averages over 12 yards per carry.

Simmons has 2,042 yards rushing (11 games -- remember he missed one for whatever reason) and 43 TDs and has passed for five more this season. Brady Walker, the transfer from Conneaut who was ineligible for the playoffs last year, has 1,542 yards rushing, 78 tackles and 10 sacks, and Amarri Lewis has chipped in with 604 yards on the ground. Nic Williams, the junior transfer from Jersey Shore: 11/344 yards receiving plus 4 INTs.

Meadville: 19 interceptions and 22 fumble recoveries.
